NY Legislature
(01/09/09) Democrats face multiple challenges now that they are in charge of the New York State Senate for the first time since the mid-1960s. Karen DeWitt reports.
(01/08/09) Dozens of public employees left Canton in a snowstorm yesterday morning to join a union rally in Albany against the Governor's proposed budget. They're hoping to stop layoffs and other cuts proposed in Gov. Paterson's budget. Unions have proposed fiscal policy of their own, including a tax on the wealthiest New Yorkers - a move the Governor has so far refused to consider. Jonathan Brown talked with Toni Oakes as rain in Albany was turning to freezing rain. She's president of Civil Service Employees Association Local 613 at SUNY Potsdam.
(01/08/09) There were no specifics for the North Country in the State of the State message, but Gov. Paterson got mostly positive reviews from the region's delegation in Albany. Martha Foley has reaction.
(01/07/09) With less than 24 hours to go before the official start of the legislative session, Senate Democrats finally coalesced around Leader Malcolm Smith, and are poised to take over the Senate for the first time in over 40 years when the session convenes today. Karen DeWitt reports.
(12/15/08) Gov. David Paterson will send his budget to the legislature tomorrow. Despite the administration's attempts to keep control of the bad news, details are leaking out. After opposing higher taxes for months, the governor wants to increase several taxes, from gasoline to clothing. Although Paterson won't seek to raise income tax rates, budget spokesman Jeffrey Gordon says he will eliminate legal exemptions he considers income tax "loop holes." Paterson's staff said the budget will include proposals to increase the welfare grant, while making government subsidized insurance available to more of the working poor. The governor projects deficits will total $47 billion over three years. The current budget is about $120 billion. Martha Foley spoke with capitol correspondent Karen DeWitt about the budget, disarray among Democrats in the state Senate, and the difficult days ahead in Albany.
(12/09/08) North Country Senator Darrel Aubertine has been tapped to chair the Senate Agriculture Committee. His position was the first to be announced at today's press conference with incoming Senate majority leader Malcolm Smith. Agriculture is one of the biggest sectors of New York's economy. Aubertine is the only active farmer in the state legislature. He owns a dairy farm in Cape Vincent in Jefferson County. Aubertine told David Sommerstein the post was his first choice for a leadership position. He said it allows him to help set the agenda for one of the biggest sectors of the state economy.

(11/11/08) Democrats won enough seats in the state Senate to hold a clear majority next year - 32 to 30. But four Democratic Senators haven't committed to the presumptive new majority leader. One of the four says he's made no decisions yet about who he will support for the post. Karen DeWitt has this update.
(11/10/08) Voters last week ended a dynasty in Albany. After more than 40 years, Republicans will no longer be in control of the Senate...probably. Reports of power struggles persist. Martha Foley spoke with capitol correspondent Karen DeWitt about the new power structure.
(11/07/08) Two days after an historic win in the state Senate, questions remain over whether the Democrats will have enough votes to actually attain majority party status. Albany correspondent Karen DeWitt reports.
(11/06/08) The new presumed leader of the Senate Democratic Majority, Malcolm Smith, says the Republicans lost control of the chamber for the first time in 44 years because the people wanted change. Albany correspondent Karen DeWitt has more.
