The locks and channels of the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Seaway system are getting old. Some were built more than 75 years ago. While the Seaway is closed in winter, workers empty the locks of their water for annual maintenance. Why low Lake Ontario levels mean high St. Lawrence levels

We've reported for months - years even - that the Great Lakes, from Superior to Ontario, are at historically low water levels.

So we were surprised to get the news this week that regulators are lowering the gates at the Iroquois Dam near Ogdensburg because the St. Lawrence River is too high.

NYS canals expect 20-year high in commercial traffic

While often seen as an economic lifeline of another era, New York's canals are poised to have a big year for moving freight; almost two centuries after goods were first transported on the upstate New York waterway.

As the state's network of canals opens this week for its 189th official season, commercial traffic along the waterways is expected to be at a two-decade high.

The Canal Corporation, the agency that oversees the 524 miles of canals, expects more than 100,000 tons of freight to move through upstate by way of the Erie Canal and its other canals.  Go to full article

NY motorists advised to beware of deer

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) Motorists who travel the New York State Thruway are being advised to be alert for deer on the highway this spring.

The Thruway Authority and state police Troop T have issued their semi-annual "antler alert" to remind motorists that deer are more active in May and June. Officials say the most deer-vehicle collisions on the Thruway occur during the next two months and October through November.  Go to full article
